If you think of SummerSlam the first thing you picture is Divas in bikinis, Kofi Kingston on a Sea-Doo or Brock Lesnar committing animal cruelty against a great white shark, you’re probably in the wrong place.
This article is about what SummerSlam really is; blockbuster matches, heated rivalries and above all else, wrestling, spelled W-R-E-S-T-L-I-N-G. Let’s run down the card, shall we?
Grudge match: Triple H vs. Brock Lesnar – As of now there is no gimmick attached to this match, but I imagine we will get something along the lines of ‘No Holds Barred’ (not the movie, cross your fingers), ‘Extreme Rules’ or a ‘Street Fight’, and quite frankly neither stipulation would be the worst thing. Expect a heated series of stare downs as both wrestlers head into ‘the biggest event of the Summer’. As for the match itself, I predict a solid brawl, a snug Lesnar potatoing the hell out of Triple H and at least one run-in from Paul Heyman and/or Stephanie McMahon. I predict a Brock Lesnar win, but this one could go either way. Watch out for a potential Pedigree on the steps or an F5 through the Spanish commentators table.
World Heavyweight Championship match: Sheamus (c) vs. Alberto Del Rio – After failing to usurp Sheamus’s throne at Money in the Bank, Del Rio kept coming, like cockroach, winning a Fatal 4- Way against Rey Mysterio, Daniel Bryan & Kane to earn another shot at the ornery Irishman’s Heavyweight Crown at SummerSlam. Now, I wasn’t initially excited that this match taking place on pay-per-view again, especially after Sheamus’s clean and relatively easy victory over the Mexican aristocrat less than one month ago. But, after seeing the dominant Del Rio on SmackDown & RAW, I am convinced that this match is the correct choice… If, and only if Del Rio is announced as the NEW World Heavyweight Champion post match. If Sheamus wins, Del Rio loses all credibility in the main event scene. Look for Alberto Del Rio to feud with Randy Orton over Del Rio’s new found gold at Night Of Champions.
CM Punk (c) vs. John Cena vs. Big Show: This is the true main event of SummerSlam. This match should serve two purposes; character development, creative spots and above all else this match needs to tell a compelling story. Oh, and CM Punk better effin’win!
Possible matches (What should happen):
Ladder Match for the Intercontinental Championship: The Miz (c) vs. Christian – Because, “One. More. Match.” With SummerSlam’s illustrious history involving many classic Ladder matches you have to add this match. Besides, Christian & Miz have great chemistry, an IC Title based feud & Christian is already ‘Mr. Ladder Match’. Do it up, Booker!
WWE Tag Team Championship match: Kofi Kingston & R-Truth (with Little Jimmy) (c) vs. Primo & Epico (with Rosa Mendes) vs. The Prime Time Players (Darren Young & Titus O’Neal with AW): I’m not sure if they’re 100% ready, but, we need a change in the tag team division, and this is that change. I would love to see Tag Team Turmoil return at Night Of Champions with The Prime Time Players retaining, before feuding further with Primo & Epico over the gold.
United States Championship match: Antonio Cesaro vs. Santino (c) – This should be Cesaro’s ‘SummerSlam Moment’. If we don’t at least get this on the pre-show I cry ‘SHAME!’, seriously, right at my television set, not kidding, I’ll scream!
Randy Orton needs a reason to be at this show, and it best not be at Damien Sandow’s expense. Here’s hoping Mr. Sandow lays Orton or another very prominent superstar flat on their ass.
Pre-Show: Ryback vs. Jinder Mahal – Not your typical Ryback Squash, a rough, tough and competitive 8-10 minute match. That’s all I ask.
WWE Women’s Championship match: Layla (c) vs. Natalya – After just seeing the match on Superstars, I am convinced that we must see a rematch, 2 out of 3 falls, Layla vs. Natalya. Go watch the match, now!
Mr. SummerSlam: So, Edge was voted as Mr. SummerSlam, and to that I say, the heck?! Where are Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels & Triple H? ‘WWE fans’ sure do have a strange view of history.
Enjoy SummerSlam, folks!
